In the UK, a tubthumper is a politician. The US equivalent of tubthumping is «stumping» (campaigning). The liner notes on the album Tubthumper, from which «Tubthumping» was the first single, put the song in a radical context, quoting a UK anti-road protester, Paris 1968 graffiti, details about the famous McLibel case and the short story «The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner». Tubthumping was written as a collective — like everything else. We wanted to make a very English album and the song is about the resilience of ordinary people. At the time we lived near a great pub called the Fforde Grene in Leeds. Irish, Afro-Caribbean, Asian, white, everyone went there. Our next-door neighbour, who was Irish, would come home drunk every weekend from there and try and get into his house, fall over and shout for his wife — it was a weekly ritual. Everyone said the single was going to be big, but the first time I realised that was when I was in Burnley football club having a piss and it came up on the Tannoy.<\/p>\n

Si bien el t\u00e9rmino pin-up -\u201dfijar con tachuelas\u201d- se acu\u00f1\u00f3 en 1941, las primeras creaciones de este tipo aparecieron hacia 1886 en revistas francesas, de la mano de Jules Ch\u00e9ret -conocido como el padre del p\u00f3ster moderno-, y en 1895, en los Estados Unidos. Entonces, Charles Dana, un dibujante de la revista Life, cre\u00f3 a la Gibson Girl, una f\u00e9mina desenvuelta que encarnaba el esp\u00edritu de la nueva mujer que estaba naciendo. Dana la deline\u00f3 jugando al tenis o andando a caballo o en bici. Eran los a\u00f1os dorados de la ilustraci\u00f3n. La bicicleta hab\u00eda sido la gran conquista femenina -una mujer ya no necesitaba de un hombre para ir de un lugar a otro- y la lucha por el sufragio femenino en los EE.UU. Los vestidos y corsets fueron reemplazados por ropa m\u00e1s c\u00f3moda y tambi\u00e9n m\u00e1s reveladora, que marcaba, por ejemplo, las piernas, antes ocultas bajo capas de tela. \u201cAl intentar ganarse un lugar en un mundo de hombres, las mujeres los liberaron para que estos las miraran y las apreciaran de una forma m\u00e1s apasionante\u201d, escribe Hanson.<\/p>\n

La imagen de estas chicas -que aparec\u00edan en situaciones dom\u00e9sticas, aunque siempre con cierto descaro- se utiliz\u00f3 para reclutar soldados en la Primera Guerra Mundial, cuando el concepto de propaganda, para exaltar el patriotismo o atacar al enemigo, se hab\u00eda establecido. \u201cCaramba. Ojal\u00e1 fuera un hombre, me unir\u00eda a la Armada\u201d, dec\u00eda una pin-up vestida como marinera. \u201cS\u00e9 un hombre y hazlo\u201d, conclu\u00eda.
